Tracing the Rise of Intensive Outpatient Care and Partial Hospitalization Through Treatment Scout GPT

June 25, 2025

NAMI Montana has been working on Treatment Scout for over a decade to share the internal resources we use to help people find intensive or niche behavioral health care across the United States.

One of the most interesting parts of maintaining Treatment Scout has been watching how treatment programs have changed over time.

The Rise of IOPs and PHPs

Two of the most notable shifts in the behavioral health landscape have been the growth of:

  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) — 281 programs listed in Treatment Scout

  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) — 70 programs listed in Treatment Scout

These programs went from being relatively rare nationwide to becoming some of the most important and commonly used levels of care available today. They now play a critical role in helping people receive structured, intensive treatment while still living at home.
