Celebrating a Decade of Dedication: Trans-Montana's Impact on Youth and Veterans Mental Health

February 9, 2024

In the heart of winter, a unique event has woven itself into the fabric of Montana’s efforts to support mental health. For ten years, the TransMontana charity snowmobile ride, organized by the Montana Snowmobile Association, has brought together riders, donors, and volunteers in support of NAMI Montana.

This year, despite an unforeseen challenge, the spirit of giving reached new heights.

When the Snow Didn’t Come, the Support Did

Due to a lack of snow, the much-anticipated ride was canceled. But the resilience and commitment of the TransMontana community shone through. Instead of the ride, a banquet in Butte was held—and it became a powerful testament to the dedication of the riders and supporters.

Not a single rider asked for a refund of their charitable donation to NAMI Montana, despite the cancellation of the ride.

That generosity speaks volumes about the heart of this community.

Gratitude for Incredible Leadership and Volunteers

Our deepest thanks go out to every snowmobiler and donor who played a role in this year’s event. Special recognition goes to:

  • Fred Bailey, President of the Montana Snowmobile Association

  • Mark Smolen, Chairman of the TransMontana Ride

Their leadership has been instrumental in sustaining this effort year after year.

We are also grateful to the Jackpine Savages and Mining City Trail Riders for hosting a memorable banquet, and to Mike Patterson, who served as master of ceremonies and helped create an atmosphere of camaraderie, gratitude, and hope.

Supporting Youth and Veterans Across Montana

The funds raised through the TransMontana event hold special significance. They are dedicated to supporting NAMI Montana’s work with youth and veterans—two populations that face unique and often complex mental health challenges.

Because of a decade of dedication from TransMontana snowmobilers, NAMI Montana has been able to go above and beyond in serving veterans and young people across our state.

A Shared Commitment to Change

Reflecting on ten years of partnership with the TransMontana charity snowmobile ride and its community brings to mind a quote by Margaret Mead, which has become an unofficial slogan of NAMI Montana:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Thank you to all of our NAMI Montana supporters and volunteers. Thank you for standing with us and for your commitment to improving mental health care for all Montanans.

Together, we are changing lives.
